Children are trained by cabin crew in a Boeing 747
Children can be trained to become cabin crew at Aviodrome during the May vacation. They will learn the tricks of the trade from professional stewards and stewardesses in a real Boeing 747. They will learn how to prepare an aircraft for departure and how to give safety instructions.
"It is a very nice opportunity to teach children in this way about what happens during a flight. After all, many people think that stewards and stewardesses are only concerned with the food and drink on board, but they do so much more," says Nance van den Dungen, project coordinator for Exhibitions and Events. "For example, they are primarily responsible for the safety of all passengers."
Lots of experience
The cabin crew employees who help and guide the children with the assignments all have experience in aviation, as they are retired stewards and stewardesses. Van den Dungen: "It is very nice to see how much they love their profession and the passion with which they talk about it. These people also have a huge bucket of experience and find it fantastic to share this with children."
On board the plane, children receive a passport from the cabin crew with five stamps missing. It is the children's job to make the passport complete again by performing various tasks, such as finding the correct seat numbers and checking for safety on board.
Special cooperation
This is the second time this training has been offered. Once again Aviodrome is cooperating with the Vereniging Oud Cabinepersoneel (VOC), the organization of former KLM stewards and stewardesses. "Once again they were very enthusiastic and really enjoyed working on this again," says Van den Dungen. "We are very happy to welcome so many experienced people to our museum in the near future." The special training will be held from April 23 through May 8.
