Aviodrome surprises 200,000th visitor exhibition with flight in classic aircraft

Aviodrome surprised the 200,000th visitor to the "Faster than Sound" exhibition with a special flight in a classic Fokker S.11.

The Fokker S.11 is a single-engine training aircraft. Its first flight was on December 18, 1947. This aircraft has two seats; the instructor and student sit side by side. The aircraft was designed for the Air Force and was used by several countries, including the Netherlands, Italy and Brazil.

Winner Huy got to sit next to the pilot for a return flight toward Zeewolde. "What a super fun experience! Much more awesome than riding a roller coaster. I even got to hold the wheel and fly a little bit!" he told me afterwards.

Exhibition one year old

The jet engine exhibit opened last year in March. This permanent exhibit, which deals with the development of the jet engine, is housed in a purpose-built, large hangar on the outdoor grounds of the aviation museum reminiscent of a cold war hangar (shelter).

Six fighter jets can be seen up close, including four historic aircraft that have been fully restored especially for this exhibit, such as the Gloster Meteor, Lockheed F-104 Starfighter and the Fokker S.14.

Always a different story

Visitors are led through different spaces, each offering a new experience. For example, Frank Whittle, the discoverer of the jet engine, 'talks' about his design in his own office. There is also an interactive test cabin where one can experience how that technology works, and in yet another room the first jet fighter of the Netherlands can be seen.
