Crew
The MiG-21 is the most built steel fighter ever. More than 10,000 aircraft of this type were produced in Russia, 840 in India, 194 in Czechoslovakia and 2,000 in China. Because of its simple technology and easy flight characteristics, air forces from over 60 different countries have flown the MiG-21. Even today, the MiG-21 is still in service with several air forces.
To many, the Mig-21 is the symbol of the arming of the Warsaw Pact, the Russian counterpart to NATO, during the Cold War. The aircraft was continuously developed from the 1955 prototype and produced until 1985.
The East German Air Force had a large number of MiG-21s in service. The authorities at the time were afraid that the pilots would defect to the West and tried to prevent an unauthorized person from flying a MiG. Therefore, a numerical code - changed daily by radio - had to be keyed in before the MiG-21 could be started up.
