Special Naval Air Service aircraft on display at Aviodrome during special edition Fly-in!

This year's Fly-in at Aviodrome, like the new interactive exhibition, is dedicated to 100 years of the Naval Air Service (MLD). During this special edition on August 19 and 20, visitors can admire special aircraft. For example, the Westland Wasp helicopter, which operated for the MLD from a naval ship to drop torpedoes, coming to Aviodrome from the United Kingdom. In the new exhibition visitors can test if they have what it takes to become a flying naval hero, children can climb a high climbing tower, help the rescue team and meet Fireman Sam.

Another special guest during the special edition of the Fly-in is the Grumman TBM Avenger. The MLD flew 78 Avengers between 1953 and 1961. Among other things, they were used for anti-submarine warfare and flew from the aircraft carrier Karel Doorman. In addition to the Westland Wasp and the Grumman TBM Avenger, there are other aircraft on display:

  • Beechcraft Model 18: used for training navigators, telegraphers and observers

  • North American/Noorduyn AT-16 Harvard: used for pilot training between 1946 and 1971 in the Naval Air Service

  • Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina: seaplane the Catalina will provide donor flights during the Fly-In (look here for more information)

  • Fokker S.11 Instructor: used as an active teaching aircraft for pilots where both pilots sat side by side. In total, the MLD flew 9 aircraft of this type

  • Fouga Magister CM-170: this jet fighter of French origin will show what it is capable of during the Fly-In!

Spectacular activities

In addition to admiring these unique pieces, visitors can bring out the hero in themselves during spectacular activities. In the new interactive exhibit, they can test whether they have what it takes to become a flying naval hero. There is also an 8.5-meter-high climbing tower, visitors can brave the pirate run, help the rescue team and meet Fireman Sam.
