André Kuipers comes to the National Space Museum in Aviodrome

The National Space Museum, located at Aviodrome Aviation Museum, is hosting a lecture on Plasma Physics Research in Space on Saturday, December 3. This lecture will share the results of the ARGES experiment during the 2004 DELTA mission.

André Kuipers conducted a number of experiments from the needs of Dutch institutes, universities and companies during the DELTA mission organized by the Netherlands, the 11-day space mission to the International Space Station in 2004. One of these experiments was the ARGES experiment. This was a project on energy-efficient lighting and was developed by Eindhoven University of Technology and Phillips. The goal was to contribute to the development of energy-efficient lighting with higher efficiency compared to existing gas discharge lamps. A facility was designed and made with which twenty lamps with different gas compositions were activated at increasing voltage.

Test measurements in space
André Kuipers took test measurements in space with these lights during the DELTA mission. In fact, it could be studied better here than on Earth because the gases are more evenly distributed in microgravity conditions. The research yielded favorable results that significantly reduced the cost of street lighting in the Netherlands. In addition to this financially interesting research, important scientific results were also obtained in the field of plasma physics research. Indeed, gas discharge is a plasma physical phenomenon.

Presenter
The lecture will be given by Gerrit Kroesen, the Princ
ipal Investigator of the experiment. He will present the results of the research at the time. Today, he is dean of the Department of Applied Physics at TU Eindhoven. In addition, André Kuipers will also attend the lecture and there will be an opportunity to ask him questions.

The lecture will take place at 10:30 a.m. and the hall will open at 10 a.m. It is only possible to attend the lecture afterregistration through the National Space Museum website and after paying the cost of participation. The lecture costs seven euros per person for adults and 3.50 euros per person for children up to age 11, friends of the NRM and for NVR members.
